This is different from present tense, which only has the one verb form (j'aime, tu joues, il finit, etc.). The first is avoir or être conjugated and then a helping verb. This tense is easy to recognize because the verb has two parts. That leaves the passé composé and the imparfait, which are both widely used. The plus-que-parfait is also rarely used in normal conversation. We can skip passé simple, since it is a literary text and people don't talk using it.
